Sumatra is an island in Western Indonesia and the islands off Sumatra are an incredible surfing destination with remarkable consistency and quality. A boat trip in the Mentawai archipelago is a dream come true for any surfer.

There are flawless waves for every standard and style of surfing ranging from fast shallow barrelling waves with deep barrels to long cruisey walls with rippable faces.

There are waves in this area year-round, however the most ideal time to surf this area is March to November, the southern hemisphere winter when the Indian Ocean is an active groundswell producing machine.

Tengirri offers two routes on the charters- either the Mentawai area or further North to the Telo islands.

Depending on the season, waves vary in size from 2 to 10 foot with the average wave height being about 4-5 ft. (head ½ high or 8ft faces) they can range anywhere from fun sized walls to awesome stand-up barrels.

The wet season starts in late-October and lasts until late March-April, with the swells dropping to a more comfortable fun size coupled with some of the most uncrowded line-ups. Winds during this time are variable and glassy. Check for the low season specials during this period.

April is the beginning of dry season, which coincides with the start of the swell season. The Southern hemisphere swells start pulsing up the Indian Ocean with peak swell season being June through to September. This period also sees the winds turn to a favourable easterly direction.

Air and water temperatures range between 27-30 degrees C all year round.

Built in Australia 20 years ago this luxury alloy 46ft power catamaran was custom built specifically for luxury surf charters. Spacious, comfortable and stable she red lines at a speedy 15 knots but cruises at 10 knots, meaning getting around the islands to have more water time is easy.

Comfortable sleeping arrangements for 8 guests plus crew in 6 separate cabins: 2 cabins with a double bed in each; 2 cabins with 2 single beds in each; and 2 cabins with 1 single bed in each.
