You have seen the flawless waves in mags and vid’s… The Mentawai, Telo and Banyak Islands attract swell all year round with more perfect peeling left and right-handers in one region than anywhere on earth.

Situated roughly 100 km off the west coast of Sumatra on the equator, this pristine archipelago is amongst the most beautiful in the world. The charter either heads to the Mentawai area and the generic route is out to the H.T’s area then further South down to Thunders then back up passing Macaronis towards the Playgrounds area. If the preference is to head further North to either the Telo islands or Banyak islands then youre in for a real treat- long waves, empty lines ups, crystal clear water, golden beaches and palm trees line the shores with classic reefs, point breaks and beach breaks, which offer waves for ALL standards of surfing ability.

Depending on the season, waves vary in size from 2 to 12 foot with the average wave height being about 4-5 ft. (head ½ high or 8ft faces) they can range anywhere from fun sized walls to awesome stand-up barrels.

The wet season starts in mid-October and lasts until late March-April, with the swells dropping to a more comfortable fun size coupled with some of the most uncrowded line-ups. Winds during this time are variable and glassy. Check for the low season specials during this period.

April is the beginning of dry season, which coincides with the start of the swell season. The Southern hemisphere swells start pulsing up the Indian Ocean with peak swell season being June through to September. This period also sees the winds turn to a favourable easterly direction.

Air and water temperatures range between 27-30 degrees C all year round.

The ocean going 110ft Schooner is the largest Western vessel in the Mentawai Islands and is set up exclusively for surf charters.

The 25 x 20ft saloon has a state of the art entertainment centre, which includes TV, VCR, and Digital and video play backs of days surfing. On deck is spacious with a seating area for 14. You will find it perfect for those breezy tropical nights sampling the local cuisine and freshly caught seafood after a hard days surfing.

A 165Hp engine and cruises at 8 knots and 15 knots under sail power her. She also has a tender making access to the surf breaks easy. She departs Padang late evening arriving in the Mentawai’s early the next day.

The accommodation is very comfortable and there are plenty of nice roomy areas to hang out at all over the vessel weather its inside or out. She is also fully air conditioned right throughout the vessel to whatever temperature you would like.

Bintang sleeps 12 guests in air-conditioned comfort – although she has considered fully booked with 10 people.

There’s plenty of fishing gear on board from trolling rods, spinning rods, hand lines to spear guns to catch those big fish for sport and fun, so you can sample the local or western cuisine cooked by the chef with 3 meals served daily after hard days of surfing.
