The Mentawai Islands attracts swell all year round with more perfect peeling left and right-handers in one region than anywhere on earth.
Santa Lusia is definitely one of the best budget charter boats in the Mentawais. Under new ownership since November 2015, improvements have been made and the quality assured now that it’s ‘owner operated’.
Situated roughly 100 km off the west coast of Sumatra on the equator, these pristine islands are amongst the most beautiful in the world with four large islands making up the Mentawai archipelago, surrounded by many smaller ones.
Crystal clear water, golden beaches and palm trees line the shores with classic reefs, point breaks and beach breaks, which offer waves for ALL standards of surfing ability.
The Santa Lusia runs her surf charters mainly in the Mentawai Island group but if requested when booking, the 5 crew can also cater for other areas such as the Telo Islands region and surrounding surf breaks. All surf trips operate with a minimum 7 surfers and she takes a maximum 10 passengers. Individual or group bookings are accepted. The Santa Lusia team will be happy to shoot photos and a surfing video which will be available for purchase at the end of your trip at an affordable price.
Many of the waves visited on the charter have been featured in dozens of surf movies throughout the years. Spots like E-Bay, Bank-vaults, Hideaways, NoKandui, Riffles, Telescopes, HT’S, Macaronis, Greenbush, Rags, Lighthouse and The Hole are some of the most popular spots for Surf film makers. All of these waves are shallow reef breaks that provide insane tube rides for experienced surfers. The list goes on with a number of easier waves like; Pit stops, Burger World, Nipussi, Baby Kandui, Karanbijat left, 4-Bobs, A-frames, Scarecrows, Bintangs, Lances Left, Sand Bars, Bat Caves, KFC, Roxy’s and Moots. Giving you the chance to carve your brains out and slip into some easy barrel rides.
Depending on the season, waves vary in size from 2 to 12 foot with the average wave height being about 4-5 ft. (head ½ high or 8ft faces) they can range anywhere from fun sized walls to awesome stand-up barrels.
The wet season starts in mid-October and lasts until late March-April, with the swells dropping to a more comfortable fun size coupled with some of the most uncrowded line-ups. Winds during this time are variable and glassy. Check for the low season specials during this period.
April is the beginning of dry season, which coincides with the start of the swell season. The Southern hemisphere swells start pulsing up the Indian Ocean with peak swell season being June through to September. This period also sees the winds turn to a favourable easterly direction.
Air and water temperatures range between 27-30 degrees C all year round.
Santa Luisa is 65ft in length and is a very spacious vessel with an air conditioned large lounge & chill area along with a bunk style accommodation set up (sleeps 10) downstairs.
Accompanying the charter is her smaller 16ft tender to get you into and out of the line up super quick or for fishing trips or island exploring. The charter is fully kitted out with all the required Flares and Safety Equipment as well.
The crew and chef offer epic service and offer western, Brazilian, Mexican and Indonesian cuisine. Their menu includes fish, beef, chicken, vegetarian, vegetables, salads, rice and beans, pasta, spaghetti, tacos, quesadillas and more… You never go hungry on-board! Free fruits, snacks, chips, cookies, chocolate and deserts.
