If you’re looking for value for money, a skipper who’s a real character, knows the islands like the back of his hand and a smaller sized charter that can host a handful of mates then the Nusa Dewata ticks all these boxes!
Nusa Dewata is an ocean-going 68ft sloop built specifically for surf charters in Indonesia in ’92 and focuses on the Mentawais but travels to the Telo’s in request. Experienced Mentawai skipper Simon is a surfing/sailing fanatic and loves to keep N.D in pristine shape. Simon not only hates crowds but also he’s a character which adds to the memories of this life-time trip! So whether you’re after huge dredging barrels or soft mellow walls he knows every inch of coastline where to find them!
You have seen the flawless waves in mags and vid’s… The Mentawai Islands attracts swell all year round with more perfect peeling left and right-handers in one region than anywhere on earth.
Situated roughly 100 km off the west coast of Sumatra on the equator, these pristine islands are amongst the most beautiful in the world with four large islands making up the Mentawai archipelago, surrounded by many smaller ones.
Crystal clear water, golden beaches and palm trees line the shores with classic reefs, point breaks and beach breaks, which offer waves for ALL standards of surfing ability.
The skipper as mentions hates crowds- so he has no set route throughout the Mentawai’s, he basically will get you into the best line up each day!
Depending on the season, waves vary in size from 2 to 10 foot with the average wave height being about 4-5 ft. (head ½ high or 8ft faces) they can range anywhere from fun sized walls to awesome stand-up barrels.
The wet season starts in mid-October and lasts until late March-April, with the swells dropping to a more comfortable fun size coupled with some of the most uncrowded line-ups. Winds during this time are variable and glassy. Check for the low season specials during this period.
April is the beginning of dry season, which coincides with the start of the swell season. The Southern hemisphere swells start pulsing up the Indian Ocean with peak swell season being June through to September. This period also sees the winds turn to a favourable easterly direction.
Air and water temperatures range between 27-30 degrees C all year round.
The Nusa Dewata is a beautiful 68’ Penisi style wooden sloop motor-sailor and translates from the Balinese language as “Island of the Gods”. She has been operating in the Mentawais for over 20 yrs taking many happy surfers on the trip of their lives.
She comfortably sleeps a max of 6 surfers in an air conditioned bunk set up and also has loads of space and shade on top deck also. Also onboard is a Sat phone, TV and stereo system. Your Australian trained Indonesian chef will blow away your taste buds with generous helpings of tasty energy filled Indonesian and western dishes guaranteed to satisfy even the fussiest eaters. The crew is very professional and well trained giving exceptional service and the cuisine onboard is amazing and plentiful – meaning if your’e not surfing 8hrs+ a day you’ll be on a diet when you get home!
She has been constantly upgraded and lovingly maintained by the current owners, and has proved herself to be a valuable asset for the surf industry here in Sumatra.
They have a 17′ alloy speedboat with a 100Hp outboard to run you around in & get to breaks ahead of the mothership. This speedboat has given them an edge over many of the bigger boats with small runabouts being able to send guests ahead of the charter to reach breaks faster as well as open up the choices of waves to surf. Its also enabled them to do more scouting around on the run to help find those “empty lineups”.
Fishing, Snorkelling, Surfing – What More Could You Want? Extensive game fishing equipment and snorkelling gear is supplied as well a couple of Stand Up Paddle boards for cruising around the lagoons. They also have a deal where you can have the crew take photos of you throughout the trip & then download the shots onto a hard drive or memory stick for a very reasonable price (AUD$75) – which believe me is nothing – imagine having an epic shot of you deep in a pit and then blowing it up, framed and on the wall at home!
