Qamea Island is in the beautiful north-eastern Fijian Islands. The moment your feet hit the sand you’ll relax and be on Fiji Time! Qamea Island, just north of the garden island of Taveuni, is home to Maqai Beach Eco Surf Resort. You’ll be warmly hosted by The Maqai Team who will do their very best to make sure your holiday is a special and memorable one. This intimate five hectare Fiji surf resort is nestled amongst a backdrop of rain forest, a stretch of private white sandy beach fringed with coconut palms, magnificent coral reefs, crystal blue warm water and true Fijian villages. It has life, culture, and traditional island atmosphere.
Surfing is possible year round in Fiji with two distinct surf seasons. The summer season from November-April and winter season May-October. The summer season is associated with fun sized swells along with glassy or light winds all day and hot with afternoon showers. This is peak surf time!
The winter season produces consistent ground swells which can get up to triple overhead. Coupled with the swell size the SE trade winds are predominant and can blow offshore only on the left-handers for 5-10 days at a time then a period of calm winds between the weather patterns– these windows of calm between the trade winds are when the right-handers can be surfed.
There are a range of waves to choose from nearby, with a variety for beginners to intermediate and advanced surfers, and overall very suited to your average level weekend surfer looking for some fun surf on holiday.
Staying at Maqai Resort you cannot get any closer to the waves, they are directly offshore – no long boat rides to cut into your surf time – a 5 min boat ride will have you surfing the 100+m long peeling right hander of Maqai.
In the months of November to May, the reefs in front of Maqai become a surfer’s paradise. No crowds, warm water, lefts and rights, it’s a surfers dream
There is small fun learners and long-board wave right in front of the resort at high tide either in front of the sand bar.
Maqai offers a range of accommodation to suit independent travellers, couples and families. Select from beachfront bures or 3 and 10 bed shared dormitory accommodation. Their 9 beachfront safari cabins are dotted along the shoreline and another garden bure comes equipped with en-suite bathroom, raised wooden floor, fans, mosquito nets, quality bed linen, lights and a private deck with tables and chairs for enjoying the spectacular ocean vistas.
Their Eco-Bures are 100% beachfront! Eco-Bures are stylized safari/Beach huts, purpose built for the outer island Fiji climate. There are eight bures speckled along the beach and nestled under the leaning palms. The rear view is of a jungle-laden mountainside and the front deck overlooks masses of colourful tropical ocean. Furnishings include comfortable dressed beds, deck chairs, clean rain water flush toilets and shower ensuite.
All food is served in the Sand Bar and Café. Meals are a combination of vegetables from the on-sight organic garden as well as local farmer’s markets. Fresh fish is on the menu often and recipes come from the local Fijian village as well as popular western favourites. On special occasions, they do a Lovo night (a meal cooked in an underground fire pit) or a Big BBQ feast. The sandbar is the heart of the resort with a communal area for dining, mingling and relaxing.
Maqai Beach is one of the best snorkelling areas in Fiji. Here you will discover an array of soft corals and a variety of fish species right out in front of the resort (a marine reserve), as well as world renowned diving spots near the resort.
Take a kayak and go exploring the coast by following the sandy bays along the shoreline or dive the spectacular reefs of Qamea an also Taveuni’s best sites with their local dive team. Courses are available with advance booking recommended.
