G-land needs no introduction. The groomed Indian ocean swells that peel around the point create world class long peeling left hand barrels which are flawless.
Bobby’s is an internationally renowned surf camp (for those after a little more comfort) situated in front of the wave on this remote stretch of coast in East Java.
You are picked up from your hotel in Bali early morning. From there, it’s a a few hours on the speedboat transfer to G-Land. After a quick breakfast you’re out in the waves!
G-land is big, long, fast, hollow, consistent and lacks nothing.
This wave wraps and winds and barrels forever and ever. To make it from the top to the bottom is an experience that surfers return for year after year.
Grajagan is an enormous left hand reef, where long interval swell from the Southern Ocean lines up and unloads over coral and lava in several distinct sections: Kong’s, Moneytrees, Launching Pads, Speedies, Chickens and 20/20s.
Kong’s; is the top of the reef, a wave that is not as long or hollow as the sections down the line. Kong’s is rarely less than three feet and is the most user friendly part of the wave, unless the swell is giant. Moneytrees; is the money part of the wave: a long, tubing section that is good up to eight feet. Launching Pads; is an outer reef that pops up on bigger swells and leads to Speedies: Fickle, but a 200-yard long barrel that can keep a surfer locked inside the barrel for as long as youre capable of!
Next is 20-20s and Chickens; softer waves for those getting their confidence up before hitting the main peaks. Lastly a couple miles inside the bay is Tiger Tracks; a right-hander for envious regular foots.
The ideal season for G-land is May through October. This is the dry season, when trade winds blowing from the southeast groom raw southern hemisphere swell wrapping onto the reef at Grajagan creating some of the most perfect waves on the planet.
The camp is set amongst a National Park called “Alas Purwo” and is open March to November. It’s located just off the beach line, right up the point.
Surrounded by dense jungle it is 10kms from the nearest road and 30km from Grajagan fishing village. From March to October, deep ocean swells peel faultlessly across a 15km stretch of coral reef to produce the longest most perfect tubes anyone is likely to see.
The speedboat from German beach in Kuta/Tuban to Java takes 2 hours and arrives approx 8am (as Java is 1hr behind Bali). Your baggage and boards arrive the same time and are taken to your room while you enjoy breakfast.
Bobby’s has 3 packages; the standard which is the basic with fan cooled rooms and a shared bathroom, while the Deluxe and Superior packages a lot more in standard and comfort- the main being nicer more spacious air conditioned rooms, mini-bar, wi-fi and private bathroom/ensuites.
A tower above the beach provides a commanding view of the surf. Behind the tower, a path leads to the restaurant and recreation building. The restaurant serves three generous meals a day, from an extensive menu, and the bar has Carlsberg on
Surfing is what its all about at Gland, but the camp does offer a few other activities to break up your water-time. Snorkelling, Fishing, Ping-pong and a Pool table
Bobby’s Surf Camp has local and international TV and Internet access so you can keep up with what is going on with the outside world.
