Samoa – the jewel in the Polynesian islands crown! One of the most beautiful island nations with a rich warm culture, tall inland peaks, lush jungle, palm fringed golden beaches with crystal clear lagoons.

Salani Surf Resort, located on Upolu’s south coast, is for travellers looking to experience the best of Samoa’s surf and culture. Salani is a dedicated surf camp with very high service and safety standards. They have trained boatmen for rescue and first aid, and have the highest standard of boats and equipment.

A number of breaks are available on North and South coasts of Upolu and Savaii. Most breaks in Samoa are well offshore, some plagued with strong currents and tides and are therefore difficult to access. Staying with a surf resort minimises the time and hassle in surfing these waves whilst striving to provide safe, fast, guided access to the best waves.

Salani Surf Resort has a perfect surf location (a 5min boat ride directly in front of the resort off a reef pass created by the river) on arguably the two finest and most consistent breaks (Salani Left & Salani Right) on Upolu. With moorings in the channel of each spot for safety, it can be an ideal position to shoot photo and video while at the same time maintaining the health of the reef. The resort can access several other epic world class breaks (from Point breaks, reefs and classic A-frames) on either the south or north coast according to seasons and conditions.

The winter season sees very consistent south swells with east trade winds, Summer still sees consistent south swells and north swells, and the trade winds switch to a very light northerly direction. These trades all year round generally come up mid/late morning and back off late afternoon.

Salani Right is a shorter, powerful wave producing open tubes. Breaking over fairly deep water an ending in a deep channel. The left is a longer wave with some open face sections but mostly a down the line barrel machine!

In general surf in Samoa is recommended for the intermediate or better surfer; having made that statement, there are often times that people on any ability can paddle out and have fun.

Although Salani is a dedicated surf resort, guests are encouraged to bring along non-surfing partners and families as there are many activities for all to enjoy.

Salani Surf Resort is situated on the mouth of the Mulivai River (almost mosquito free), between the base of a lush tropical jungle basin, crystal blue lagoon and next to the rural and still very traditional Salani village. Salani can accommodate 16 guests comfortably in 8 air-conditioned fales (bungalows). Each unit has a large “L” shaped deck and is raised to receive cool ocean breezes and look directly over the lagoon towards “Salani Left” and “Salani Right” reef breaks. The ocean view fales have their own en-suite with stunning rock walled bathrooms and shower flow with solar heated water. To maintain this quality and enjoyable guest experience the resort hosts no more than 12 surfing guests at any one time.

Additional activities include fishing, snorkelling, kayaking, village walks, volleyball, island tours and nightlife excursions.

As well as surfing in the un-crowded pristine South Pacific Ocean, or relaxing by their pool, Salani offers a number of scheduled activities in and out of the water (based around the surf conditions) in order to provide a great experience for the surfer and non-surfing partner alike. Salani Surf Resort has become known for showing surfers and their partners the islands natural and cultural beauty whilst still focusing on the surf-great for couples.

The meals are prepared with the freshest local and imported fruits, vegetables and meats, and served in generous proportions to satisfy the largest appetites.

Been a few times now- first time back in 2001 and seen the resort go through changes and improvements over the years. My last tip was earlier this year – always try and time my trips when both North and South swells are running.. and I SCORED .. again! Salani have the breaks out front and on the north coast sooo dialled! I’ve never caught so many barrels on a surf trip. Still the same ol friendly local staff there, the rooms with air-con and ensuites now are awesome and the recent additional of the pool tops it all off! Nothing like a cold vailima in the pool at the end of the day! Off again- same time next year! Thanks guys!
