Sumatra is an island in Western Indonesia and the islands off Sumatra are an incredible surfing destination with remarkable consistency and quality. A boat trip in Sumatra is a dream come true for any surfer.

There are flawless waves for every standard and style of surfing ranging from fast shallow barrelling waves with deep barrels to long cruisey walls with rippable faces. There are waves in this area year-round, however the most ideal time to surf this area is March to November, the southern hemisphere winter when the Indian Ocean is an active groundswell producing machine.

The charters search and explore the Mentawai area and can venture further North to the Telo, Nias, Hinako and Banyak islands on request at an extra charge.
Depending on the season, waves vary in size from 2 to 10 foot with the average wave height being about 4-5 ft. (head ½ high or 8ft faces) they can range anywhere from fun sized walls to awesome stand-up barrels.

The wet season starts in mid-October and lasts until late March-April, with the swells dropping to a more comfortable fun size coupled with some of the most uncrowded line-ups. Winds during this time are variable and glassy. Check for the low season specials during this period.

April is the beginning of dry season, which coincides with the start of the swell season. The Southern hemisphere swells start pulsing up the Indian Ocean with peak swell season being June through to September. This period also sees the winds turn to a favourable easterly direction.

Air and water temperatures range between 27-30 degrees C all year round.

Wave Hunter is 70 feet long with 50mm wood planking making for a very solid vessel. It was rebuilt to accommodate up to 12 passengers (16 on request) with comfort. Two couple cabins and 12 dormitory beds all with AC.

The top deck also gives our guests full 360˚ view of the waves from the front and back. It has twin engines, two generators, Luxury open plan licensed for up to 12 pax live aboard all in air condition comfort.

Wavehunter is really spacious, comfortable and stable – and they cruise at 8 – 10 knots and if the waves are pumping they can push 14 knots! The charter is accompanied by a hard-bottom 16ft aluminium Tender with 40HP Yamaha outboard and an additional aluminium boat with a 15hp Yamaha engine for back up. She’s got all the safety and backup equipment also to make sure you’re safe at all times.​

On board you will find snorkelling gear, yoga mats and fishing gear/ trolling rods to catch those big fish for dinner and fun. The tender will also run you to deserted islands to explore or to the bigger ones to experience traditional villages.

Their chef is very skilled and specialises in Western, Brazilian, Mexican and Indonesian cuisine. They have a rotating menu which includes various dishes of fish, prawns, squid, beef, chicken, vegetables, salads, rice and beans, pasta, spaghetti, lasagna, tacos, quesadillas, burgers and more… meals fit for kings – eat all you want. Plus free fruits, snacks, chips, cookies, chocolate, ice cream and desserts to make sure you never get hungry.
