The ultimate in Maldivian surf charters! If you’re serious about surfing in the Maldives then the outer atolls are hard to beat. Outer Atolls Surfaris explore the truly isolated southern atolls on Horizon 2. A fully equipped, live-aboard motor cruiser featuring comfort and reliability without the luxury price tag.
If you’re after a surf trip of a life-time then the outer atolls are unbeatable! In the Outer Atolls you can snorkel on unspoilt reefs, catch a fish for dinner and see parts of the country that most tourists never experience, an you can surf some of the best waves of your life! With some of the most untouched and uncrowded parts of the Indian Ocean, this area is stunning!
The breaks in the southern atolls work on a wider range of swell and wind conditions than those of the Inner Atolls so an experienced Outer Atoll guide is essential. Atoll Adventures were the first company in the 90s to operate Outer Atoll surf tours in the region and ensured surf guides always had an excellent knowledge of the surf breaks and conditions; but none more so than our current Surf Guide Madey who grew up on the island of Gadhdhoo where he learnt to surf at Tiger Stripes. Madey has worked many years as a surf guide on charter boats and also at Pasta Point and apart from being a good surfer and professional guide he is great company.
In 2018 Horizon-2 will operate 10 night scheduled charters from February through to November for exclusive group or individual bookings. While March/April & September/October are regarded as the premium months, May to August is the peak of the Indian Ocean swell season and whatever the conditions there is virtually always a break that will be on.
There are about a dozen breaks in the region, including Beacons (Right), Castaways (Right), Five Islands (Right), Love Charms (Left), Tigers (Left), Bluebowls (Right) and Two Ways (Left & Right).
Upon arrival into Male you’re then transferred to a smaller inter-atoll domestic flight, down to Huvadhoo Atoll in the southern region. For the next 10 nights you’ll be in surf heaven catching and eating your own fish, snorkelling the pristine reefs and of course getting uncrowded mind blowing barrels! There is a max board length restriction of 8’6″ for these inter atoll flights, which means if you’re travelling with longboards exceeding this length, then the charter will need to start from Male. For charters originating in Male its recommended (due to the travel time) that a few extra days are needed to cover all of the surf breaks.
Horizon-2 is a modern cruising vessel built in 2002, refurbished and very well maintained. For over 15 years the Horizon 2 charters of the Outer Atolls have been the reliable and most affordable option for this region. A comfortable mid-range boat with 6 x Twin a/c cabins with bathrooms; serves great food and has a support dhoni and experienced surf guide.
Built in 2002 and recently refurbished, Horizon II is an 80ft vessel with six comfortable air-conditioned cabins all have fan and en-suite bathroom. Facilities include a fully stocked bar/saloon area with TV, DVD and Hi-Fi entertainment system. Horizon II has a dinghy, and is also accompanied by a support dhoni – a traditional Maldivian boat ideally suited to shallow lagoons. The dhoni improves access to waves and anchorages and allows the group to split between breaks. And the main boat can be in a safe anchorage while the support dhoni allows extra dawn and evening surf sessions.
She is crewed with some of the most experienced locals who know their stuff. She takes no more than 10 surfers-keeping the crowd factor down.
The skipper, Captain Waheed is the most experienced skipper in the region from over 16 years of surf charters; also a local from the island of Gadhdhoo he really knows the local communities, the islands, reefs, breaks and most importantly the surf conditions.
This is a remote region, and our well established emergency procedures have proved to be of vital importance on a few occasions when serious medical problems have occurred. Horizon-2 has all the necessary safety and communications equipment including Marine Radar, VHF, Radio Telephone, mobile phone (most areas), GPS, desalination plant, generators, and a trained and experienced crew.
This is a true waterman’s paradise! In the Outer Atolls you can snorkel on unspoilt reefs, catch a variety of big reef fish and even game fish like striped marlin and tuna for dinner!
It’s common to be surfing with massive pods of dolphins, turtles, manta rays and if you’re lucky whale sharks!
This trip will take you on a real adventure and see parts of the country that most tourists never experience….and you can surf some of the best waves of your life!
