Nekweta Surf Resort
Includes: airfares (ex Auckland), return airport transfers, 7 nights accommodation, all meals and 6 surf transfers including 1 day trip further south to the Nekweta area.
Nekweta Surf Camp is located just over an hours drive from Noumea on the west coast. Located a short walk from the only beach break in New Cal, the camp takes no more than 10 surfers max. All guests will enjoy the place for its calm and serene setting, topped by the soothing sound of waves splashing on the nearby beach. This tropical haven, located on the Roche Percée headland, surrounded by mountains, the Néra River and the Pacific Ocean, is a magic place! The lagoon, the ocean, the river and the mangroves combine to deliver a beautiful array of biodiversity and Nëkwéta sits in a central location- with easy access by boat to some epic surf breaks!
The breaks on the west coast of New Caledonia need either Southwest, South or Southeast swells. The swell is consistent here, generally all lows between Tasmania, Sydney and New Zealand send up clean ground swells. New Caledonia is influenced by southeast trade winds, mostly from November to March. Most lefts can hold up to 15 knots: trades are offshore or cross shore on most of them. On the other hand the trades blow out the rights which really need glassy conditions. In winter the winds come down the mountains and blow east or north-east, which is good for some lefts and a few rights. Onshore winds from the west are rare but announce stormy weather.
The Roche Percée beach faces the Bourail pass, which is the widest and the closest to the main island’s west coast, and hosts the island’s only beach break, which is great for longboarders and beginners.
Nekweta access’ a handful of breaks in the Bourail area including the river mouth at the beach break in front. Their go-to wave is “Secrets” a 100m long left hand barrel machine, great for intermediate surfers. The resort has a 25ft fiberglass (175hp) speed boat, enabling safe and fast access to several other left and right hand reef breaks in the area, and also further south toward Ouano area (when weather conditions permit).
Most of these reef breaks are on the edges of reef passes, so the rides are quite long as they wrap around the reef to the inside of the lagoon.
The buildings respect Oceanian and Melanesian architecture, the atmosphere tranquil and the service is personalized and authentic.
Accommodation consists of a large Melanesian huts and bungalows. Their largest is perfect for groups or families (fully equipped with TV, DVD), furnished with 2 double beds and two single beds, kitchen/bar with a separate bathroom block with hot water showers, outdoor deck with wooden table, hammocks & lazy chairs.
There are three other comfortable Melanesian bungalows. The “Charming Hut”; built with timber and river stones sets the authentic Caledonian atmosphere. It is fully furnished with artful wood work and has two double beds on the mezzanine and two single beds on the ground floor. The “bungalow”; basic but charming is equipped with two single beds, ventilators, lighting and power plugs. The bathroom facilities are in a separate block, in true local fashion. The “Tropical Room”; a Balinese style bungalow with two separate rooms, up and downstairs. Each room is equipped with one double and one single bed, bathroom and air conditioning.
The cuisine at the resort is essentially made of fresh local produce. All meals are ala carte and the culinary experience is enhanced by the set up. Guests can relax with a cold beer or cocktail while admiring the numerous sculptures and carvings, or simply sitting around the fire pit re-telling stories of the days waves and barrels.
The bar and dining-room are in a large open Faré where a massive table made of local timber sits, surrounded by the garden’s vegetation, for the guests delight.
Surfing at Secrets is an unforgettable experience: the clarity of the water and the color of the coral beneath your feet are intense. Turtles and rays often show up at the break, as well as dugongs and dolphins.
The resort does have surfboards, bikes and snorkeling gear for hire, and its high recommended at least one trip to the outer reef on a snorkeling trip. The coral and sea life here is some of the most pristine and untouched you will ever find.
