Nemberala Beach Resort really does set the benchmark for surf resorts! Wave quality, resort standard, facilities, activities, service, and the natural beauty of this area are what keeps surfers, their partners and families returning for more!

Rote Island is a tiny island South of West Timor and East of Sumba in the East Nusa Tenggara province of far East Indonesia. For most guests traveling to Nemberala Beach Resort this means a fair trek from home; but the travel is part of the experience and the remoteness is what makes it so special! Travel to Rote usually requires an overnight in Bali given the various flight schedules, but many choose to add an additional night or two to experience the wonderful culture and vibrant atmosphere of Bali.

The Surf

Although hot and tropical, it is much more arid than the islands to the north such as Bali, Java and Sumatra. This dryer climate means very few bugs and the ability to cruise around and enjoy the area without being drenched in perspiration.

Rote, Nemberala, and the surrounding Islands pick-up all the South and South West swells tracking across the Indian Ocean; same as the rest of Indonesia. This area has a common misconception that it struggles to attract swell- but if you check a hydrographic chart you’ll see a finger of deep water that points and attracts swell all the way up to this area no probs! The swell season starts in March through November with the largest swells May through September/October. The wind pattern typically will see light and variable wind conditions early and late season, with firm and consistent offshore trades blowing June through Aug/Sept.

Nemberala Left is a wave magnet and the main break fronting the resort and the premier wave in this region of Indonesia. The break is also known as T-Land by some given its similarities to the famous wave on Java, G-Land. Nemberala is definitely a more “user friendly” wave than its namesake. The point like reef is almost 300+m long and broken into four separate take off zones and is perfect for most levels of surfer.

Suckies is a 10 min boat ride north and offers up hollow right tubes!
Boa is typically accessed by a 15 min boat transfer, but can also be accessed by overland transfer. The right-hander starts with a steep hollow top section which opens up to a thick down the line wall with a long barrel section. There are a handful of other breaks- most on offshore deserted islands and accessed by one of the three resorts’ 20ft speedboats.

The Rooms

Built on a five-acre beachfront property which is located directly in front of the main break providing all rooms a view of the Indian Ocean. From the bar and restaurant, you will have a view of the 300m long left reef/point which lies just off shore. The large open-air restaurant and lounge make the most of the tropical weather while the bar provides beautiful views of the beach and surf in addition to being close enough to the pool area for convenient poolside service.

The long bar is often the focal point given the spectacular views of the surf and sunsets. Bar stock includes icy cold beer, imported wine and a full supply of spirits served straight up or in specialty cocktails.

Built by craftsmen with locally quarried stone, exposed regional hardwoods and traditional Rotenese alang roofs the design and architecture of all facilities match the traditional feel of the region. The 4 large duplex bungalows are nicely appointed and each feature private and spacious outdoor bathrooms, porches and views of the pool, ocean and surf breaking on the outer reef.

The villas house two rooms (each with private bathroom) that can be joined by interior door to accommodate families or groups of friends traveling together, or kept separate. Rooms can be set up as king or twin and by specific request children or triple occupancy may be accommodated. Each room is cooled by two large ceiling fans or air-conditioning.
