Located off Sumatra is the Indonesian Island of Sipora in the Mentawai Islands. This is the heavenly location of an all-inclusive surf resort, Hollow Tree’s. The sublime scenery of palm trees, golden beaches, backed with tropical rainforests and impressive ocean swells in crystal clear water make this resort and location stunning.
Wrapping around the island’s southern end is the famous Lance’s Right wave, also known as Hollow Tree’s (H.T’s).
Lance’s Right, in short, is one of the best and most consistent, barrelling right-handers in the world and the resort looks straight out over it. The wave wraps around the south end of the island and into the sheltered bay where it unloads on the reef known as The Office and finally the Surgeon’s Table. As the name suggests, this wave is for intermediate and advanced surfers and rated as one of the top five waves in the world. Their sister wave- Lance’s Left is a long and consistent left hander right around the corner from the Resort. The wave offers a barrel of the take off and a long open face for multiple manoeuvers down the line. Being on the other side of the island and facing east the left is a good option when the wind is onshore at HT’s. Perfect for all levels and long perfect lefts lovers. With 10 other world-class waves within a short boat or bike ride from the resort, there’s surf to suit all levels. Just a short bike ride away from the resort, the beach break offers beautiful crystal clear left and right peaks, perfect for all levels and even if you want to learn how to surf they can organize lessons.
Depending on the season, waves vary in size from 2 to 10 foot with the average wave height being about 4-5 ft. (head ½ high or 8ft faces) they can range anywhere from fun sized walls to awesome stand-up barrels.
The wet season starts in mid-October and lasts until late March-April, with the swells dropping to a more comfortable fun size coupled with some of the most uncrowded line-ups. Winds during this time are variable and glassy. Check for the low season specials during this period.
April is the beginning of dry season, which coincides with the start of the swell season. The Southern hemisphere swells start pulsing up the Indian Ocean with peak swell season being June through to September. This period also sees the winds turn to a favourable easterly direction.
Air and water temperatures range between 27-30 degrees C all year round.
Every villa has its own pool, so you can take the plunge in complete privacy. Get a sun-kissed glow by unwinding on one of the poolside loungers. Alternatively, seek shade after a day of surfing by resting at the cabana area. Katiet beachfront is just a few footsteps away from the pool and cabana, making it easy to keep a close eye on the swell. The white walls and ceilings of the villas give the rooms an airy feel, while the windows allow natural light to flood into the living spaces. Enjoy hot water showers any time of day and Air-conditioned (A/C) comfort is guaranteed in each of the rooms for your entertainment pleasure. If you want to keep your soft drinks and alcoholic beverages chilled, use the mini fridges. Our Mentawai beach resort features a stylish restaurant and bar that seats a maximum of 20 people. Lunch and dinner is dished up buffet-style, allowing you to take your pick of culinary delights prepared with organic and locally-grown ingredients.
A nutritious lunch will set you up for a day of surfing. Check out HT’s famous waves from the restaurant and when you’ve taken a drop into the hollow right-hander, return to the resort restaurant for an energy-boosting glass of freshly squeezed juice or a thirst-quenching smoothie. The restaurant concept is a combination of French, Thai and Indonesian cuisine with stunning views of the most famous HT’s waves.
