New Caledonia is only two hours flight from Auckland and is situated in the heart of the South Pacific, 1500km east of Australia. The main island is accompanied by the Loyalty Islands, Isle of Pines, Belep and a myriad of small islands. The barrier reef around New Caledonia stretches over 1600km and encircles the main island, creating the world’s largest (and one of the most beautiful) lagoons on the planet.. with lots of reef passes!

New Caledonia receives swell all year round, with the months of May through to October providing optimum wind conditions. New Caledonia is an absolutely stunning island and has the largest lagoons in the world, thus making surf breaks only accessible by boat, so the beauty of being on a yacht is that you are able to find plenty of offshore waves!

New Caledonia is surrounded by a 1700 km barrier reef, which counts 200 passes with surfing potential. The most consistent region is the south west barrier reef, as it offers the best swell and wind conditions.

The breaks on the west coast of New Caledonia need either Southwest, South or Southeast swells. The swell is consistent here, generally all lows between Tasmania, Sydney and New Zealand send up clean ground swells. New Caledonia is influenced by southeast trade winds, mostly from November to March. Most lefts can hold up to 15 knots: trades are offshore or cross shore on most of them. On the other hand the trades blow out the rights which really need glassy conditions. In winter the winds come down the mountains and blow east or north-east, which is good for some lefts and a few rights. Onshore winds from the west are rare but announce stormy weather.

Cooled by the Pacific Ocean and the trade winds, New Caledonia enjoys a sunny semi-tropical climate year round. The warm season, from September to March, has temperatures averaging between 25-27°C, with short occasional rains. The cool season, from April to August, has temperatures averaging between 20-23°C, but water temperature stays warm enough for swimming. January to March is the rainy season, while September to November is the dry season.

After arriving at Tontouta international airport you are then transferred to Noumea’s main harbour (45min drive) where you’ll board your catamaran charter and then you’re off!

We have access to three catamarans and they are all equipped with 4 double bedded cabins. They are of exceptional value and a great standard. They range from 40-46ft in length and are fully equipped with an entertainment system, desalinater/generator, Seadoo Jet ski, and scuba-diving facilities. They take a maximum of 8 people and are skippered by experienced surf guides. A good way too, for surfing Tenia and Noumea areas.
As these yachts are based on a charter basis, its up to you how many you have on board in your group. Being only 4 mates on board can be a bit over budget but is a great comfort. All yachts are accompanied with a 15hp tender to help get you into the line-up or to shore.

Apart from surfing some of the most uncrowded reef breaks in the South Pacific, just being out sailing on an amazing catamaran on a crystal clear lagoon is mind blowing.

As the charter is exclusive to your group, you’re free to explore and stop on sandy atolls and islands or snorkel and explore the undersea world. New Caledonia has some of the best diving and snorkeling in the Pacific and has a UNESCO world heritage marine site. The coral and sea life here is some of the most pristine and untouched you will ever find. Turtles and manta rays are often seen, as well as dugongs and dolphins.
