There is still a place where time forgot. Where the crowds haven’t yet reached, where the guidebooks haven’t ruined, where local children splash and play in a pristine lagoon lapping at golden sands just inside of an empty, funnelling right-hander. On the lesser-known island of Savaii, a short ferry ride from Upolu in the Independent State of Samoa (formerly Western Samoa), a road leads to a lost corner of the earth called Aganoa Beach (roughly translated: "The Place Where No One Lives"). Here, at Aganoa, lies a surfer’s — and non-surfer’s — paradise. A consistent, world-class A-frame reef break peels into a channel just 50 yards in front of a restaurant perched at the sea. A gentle, idyllic lagoon lined with a picture-perfect beach hugs the verdant, manicured grounds in seemingly endless and fragrant bloom. Eight airy, newly-renovated and self-contained fales (bungalows) doze near the sea.

You can fly into Apia on the island of Upolu, Samoa from NZ. From there, a designated surf guide from Aganoa will meet you at the airport with a van and transport you to the ferry terminal 10 minutes away. From there, it’s a quick hour-long ferry ride (with multiple crossings all day) from Upolu to Savai’i. Then another 10 minutes by van to Aganoa Lodge.

While primarily catering for surfers (only 8 at a time) seeking its guaranteed uncrowded waves, Aganoa — like Savaii itself — is also the perfect place for the family. With an array of activities from kayaking, fishing, snorkelling and more, both on-site and island-wide, Aganoa is a stress-free destination without the exorbitant price tag that most destinations of this calibre attach. Couple that with Samoa’s beautiful Polynesian culture and people — and you may never want to return home…With empty waves just outside your fale, in this private piece of Eden surrounding your companion or family, it’s a perfect location.

Every aspect of the Aganoa Lodge Samoa guest experience is designed to immerse you in Savai’i’s pristine natural environment. The goal is to transport you to another time and place. Aganoa Lodge Samoa they invite you to unplug from your busy, overbuilt world and experience something perfect. Perfect and simple.

The “rooms” are simple. Eight stand-alone, open-air fales (bungalows) each surrounded by its own “privacy screen” intended to give guests their own perfect carved out piece of paradise. Each unit in constructed almost entirely of reclaimed timber and lava rocks collected on-site, and each features a king or queen sized, four poster mosquito-netted bed, en suite bathroom with open-sky shower (with Molton Brown amenities), power outlets, safes and private porch decks for relaxing or watching the surf (literally steps from the lagoon beach). Mosquito nets and en-suite bathrooms in all rooms, King or Queen Sized beds (depending on group configurations) 2x daily housekeeping.

Aganoa Lodge Samoa offers a delicious and authentic set-menu for breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the oceanfront restaurant. Locally sourced and sustainable ingredients anchor a menu of Samoan delicacies blended with Western cuisine. Stars are fresh fish caught daily right offshore and organic fruits and veggies grown either in our on-site hydroponic facility or in the gardens of nearby villages. The bar of course is stocked with ice-cold beverages, local beers, New Zealand wines, spirits and bottled water.

The incredible part about most breaks on Savai’i (including the main break out front) is how accessible they are. While most breaks on neighboring Upolu require a boat ride to an outer reef, nearly all of Savai’i’s waves are a short paddle from the beach. Serving up consistent rights and/or lefts for any skill level 2-10ft, surfing is even allowed at Aganoa on Sundays (wink-wink).

There are over 10 different waves within an hour’s run of the lodge; the majority are within 30 minutes. The surf there is ultra-consistent, with lefts and rights that work in all tides. Best of all, the variety of surf offers many options for all levels of surfers and equipment.
