The benchmark in surf resorts! Nemberala has it all in waves, quality, service, standard and value for money. This region is one of Indonesia's last best kept secrets. For the slightly more adventurous surfer. Fly from Bali, east across the Indonesian archipelago to Kupang in West Timor. After reaching Kupang, you overnight here and the next morning are transferred by car to the harbour. The ferry and car trip from the harbour to the resort on Roti takes 4 hours and is amazing. For groups there is an option of taking a small (12 seater) charter flight from Kupang to the island and back again on departure. This avoids the overnight in Kupang and time travelling which means more time at the resort and more time in the water! Well worth the extra cost!
This mysterious island sits on the edge of very deep water with very consistent waves breaking around the island. The island is truly unique with unspoilt beaches, sheer cliffs that drop into the sea and pockets of tropical forest.
There are a handful of breaks within easy access on Roti but the main break is Nemberala (left) out front. Nembrala has to be one of Indo's longest waves, offering rides of up to 300m or more.
Other breaks include; Sucky's and Bo'a and the offshore islands of N'Dau and Do'o - both having lefts and rights. Do'o is claimed to have the longest right in Indonesia with rides of at least a few hundred metres. The months between May and October have the most swell with July-September being the peak months.
There is some amazing snorkelling here (bring your own gear) and seeing large Manta rays is quite common. Exploring the island is encouraged, with sea eagles and sea turtles abundant. Meals are local cuisine and consist mainly of fish, squid, vegetables, salads and pasta.
Surrounding the pool are eight bungalows each of which have two rooms with a comfortable double bed in each. All have en-suite bathrooms with shower, toilet, and sink. Its a perfect location and resort for taking the non-surfing partner (non-surfing partner specials apply) or family. The building architecture keeps in theme with the Indonesian culture, and the rooms are classy and rustic.
Meals are served in the main dining house which is situated right on the beach so you can check the surf easily out front.
Accommodation is limited to only 16 guests at a time.
