You have seen the flawless waves in mags and vid’s… The Mentawai Islands attracts swell all year round with more perfect peeling left and right-handers in one region than anywhere on earth.
“Kandui Left” and Baby Kandui are directly in front of the Kandui Villas and there are two dozen other spots within 30 minutes by fast boat, in all directions. For getting to the surf, Kandui has two, five-meter plastic dinghies, one 5.2 meter Kahajaya center-consul speed boat and four, 45-50 foot longboats for accessing the spots outside of Playgrounds: Hideaways, Nipussi, Burgerworld, E-Bay. “Kandui Right” (AKA Rifles) is arguably the best right hander in the entire world. It can be up to 800+ yards long, with freight train tube after freight train tube from start to finish. Rifles is only six minutes from Kandui Villas and she’s is a fast, perfect, barreling right-hander- a dream wave for natural footers. There are a few other waves on the island including soft beach and reef breaks so theres waves to suit ALL levels of ability.
Depending on the season, waves vary in size from 2 to 10 foot with the average wave height being about 4-5 ft. (head ½ high or 8ft faces) they can range anywhere from fun sized walls to awesome stand-up barrels.
The wet season starts in mid-October and lasts until late March-April, with the swells dropping to a more comfortable fun size coupled with some of the most uncrowded line-ups.  Winds during this time are variable and glassy. Check for the low season specials during this period.
April is the beginning of dry season, which coincides with the start of the swell season. The Southern hemisphere swells start pulsing up the Indian Ocean with peak swell season being June through to September. This period also sees the winds turn to a favourable easterly direction.
Air and water temperatures range between 27-30 degrees C all year round.

Kandui® features twelve private bungalows, also known as traditional Mentawai uma’s, using the finest quality local hardwoods. The uma’s are intelligently designed, combining traditional Mentawai craftsmanship with modern day luxury and amenities.
The inspiration was to provide a place where a surf traveller could feel comfortable and confident enough to bring their significant other and families. At Kandui they offer the only infinity pool in Western Sumatra, as well as a restaurant, bar, game room and spa. A nanny service can be provided upon special request.
Each uma is quite large at 7.5m wide x 10.5 m long. Each uma has two king-sized beds downstairs, and one king sized – or two single sized beds – in a spacious, second-story loft. The umas are hand carved throughout with a different Mentawai animal, or jungle theme, and all the furniture is made of local hardwoods. Each uma comes with two air-conditioning units, so guests can adjust their personal comfort level. Each of the 12 umas are configured making them very versatile with room for 1-4 people, making the Umas perfect for singles, couples, groups of friends, or families. Wi-fi is also available throughout the resort.
Good food is vital to surfers burning calories in perfect waves under the tropical sun. The Kandui menu features local seafood caught by villagers and guests, but also a variety of Italian, Japanese, Mexican, Thai, Chinese, American, and Indonesian cuisine. Barbecues are also popular at Kandui, and all that protein is served alongside organically-grown vegetables from a massive green house on the property.

They have a host of other activities including gym and yoga facilities, beach volley ball, billiards, ping pong, boce ball, horse shoes, snorkelling, SUP’s, kayaks, board games, satellite television for your favourite shows, news, and sports, as well as a large library of DVD movies. The resort also offers a variety of theraputic massage to relax a sooth away sore muscles from travel, surf and everyday stress. The Kandui staff give first class care to surfers who have been working themselves over on the reefs all day long, and to non-surfing guests who want some TLC!
